Email Server
Monday, April 28th, 2008 by David PotterThe DPotter.net email server is for use by family and friends. This page contains information about how to access the server. For all the guides the following information will be used:
Name of person: John Smith UUser name: John.S Password: My#Sample Email address: John.S@DPotter.net
There are several ways to use the DPotter.net email server. You can use the web interface, POP3, IMAP, or the Exchange Server interface.
Outlook Web Access
You can access your account on the DPotter.net email server through a web browser. Outlook Web Access is used as the interface.
Note that while you can use any web browser, including Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, Google Chrome, etc., you will get the best results using Internet Explorer. There are limitations when using all other browsers that may make it more difficult to use.
- Navigate to https://www.dpotter.net/exchange/. You should be presented with a page with the following contents:
- Enter your user name in the User name field (e.g. John.S). The case of the letters is not important, so the name could also be entered as john.s or JOHN.S.
- Enter your password in the Password field (e.g. My#Sample).
- If the computer you are using is your own computer or one you trust with private information, select the Private computer option. Note that this option will only appear when using Internet Explorer.
- Click the Log On button.
Using POP3 or IMAP
Many email applications, including Microsoft Office Outlook, allow you to send and receive email using POP3 and/or IMAP. For this email server, it is recommend that you use IMAP, although both protocols are supported.
These instructions assume you are using Microsoft Office Outlook, although you can use any email application that supports these protocols.
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (POP3)
- Start Microsoft Office Outlook.
- Click the Tools menu, then click E-mail Accounts.
- Click Add a new e-mail account and click Next.
- Click POP3 then click Next.
- Enter the information in the following fields:
- Your Name - Enter the display name for your account (e.g. John Smith).
- E-mail Address - Enter the email address for this account (e.g. John.S@DPotter.net).
- Incoming mail server (POP3) - Enter www.dpotter.net.
- Outgoing mail server (SMTP) - Enter www.dpotter.net.
- User Name - Enter the domain and user name for the account (e.g. DPOTTER\John.S). Although not always required, you should always specify the DPOTTER\ before your user name.
- Password - Enter the password exactly as they were given to you, including punctuation, spaces, and the case of the letters (e.g. My#Sample).
- Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) - Check this checkbox.
- Click the More Settings button.
- Click the Outgoing Server tab.
- Check the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication checkbox.
- Click OK.
- Click the Test Account Settings button. A pop-up window will be displayed indicating that Outlook is testing access to the email server. When this completes, click OK.
- If the test executed successfully, click the Next button and then the Finish button. You have successfully configured Outlook to access your account on the email server.
Using Outlook directly against the Exchange Server
If you use Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007, you can connect directly to the Exchange Server, which will allow you to store your email on the server and access it from multiple computers.
- Click the Start button in Windows.
- Right-click the E-mail option (with Microsoft Office Outlook below it) in the upper-left corner and click Properties.
- On the Mail Setup dialog box, click the Show Profiles button.
- On the Mail dialog box on the General tab, click the Add button.
- On the New Profile dialog box type the name of the profile you are creating (e.g. DPotter.net) and click OK.
- On the Add New E-mail Account dialog box on the Auto Account Setup page check the Manually configure server settings or additional server types checkbox and click Next.
- On the Choose E-mail Service page select the Microsoft Exchange option and click Next.
- On the Microsoft Exchange Settings page enter the following information:
- Microsoft Exchange server - Enter zion.dpotter.local.
- Use Cached Exchange Mode - Check this checkbox.
- User Name - Enter the display name for your account (e.g. John Smith).
- Click the More Settings button.
- On the General tab enter Potter Family Exchange Server in the edit box.
- On the Connectiontab check the Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP checkbox.
- Click the Exchange Proxy Settings button.
- On the Microsoft Exchange Proxy Settings dialog box:
- Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange - Enter www.dpotter.net.
- Check the Only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate checkbox.
- Enter the following in the edit box below the checkbox - msstd:www.dpotter.net
- Check the On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP checkbox.
- Check the On slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP checkbox.
- Select Basic Authentication in the drop-down box in the Proxy authentication settings group.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- If the name in the User Name field is NOT underlined, click the Check Name button.
- Click the Next button then click the Finish button.
