I’d been looking for a better way to manage and display photos on my blogs when I ran across Alex Rabe’s fantastic NextGEN Gallery plugin. It provides a comprehensive interface for managing photos and images through a set of admin pages, and it displays photos in a way that makes your web site look very professional.
Overall Grade: A+
Plugin Name: NextGEN Gallery Plugin URI: http://alexrabe.boelinger.com/wordpress-plugins/nextgen-gallery/ Download URI: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-gallery/ Version: 0.83 Description: A NextGENeration Photo gallery for the WEB2.0(beta) Author: Alex Rabe Author URI: http://alexrabe.boelinger.com/ Support Forum: http://alexrabe.boelinger.com/forums/
Alex has some good information on his site about this plugin. I will fill in some of the details in this series of articles.

Slightly off topic, but I’ve used a admin menu plugin for some time now as it’s a better interface than the old or new WordPress admin pages. It’s called Ext JS Admin Menu
Currently, my problem with NGG is that preview pictures don’t show on the galleries within an album on a page when the argument is set to “compact” instead of “extend”.
Can anyone help?

*i can’t figure out how to get this to work, i in the back end uploaded a ton of photos.. yes it still says i only uploaded the 40 from wordpress, if all of the other photos are sitting in the same folder as the ones uploaded in wordpress, why don’t they show up? … also I added the tag, how come the gallery or album doesn’t show up? help please!
June 5th, 2008 at 1:44 am
I had a problem with the NGG preview not working and a recent email from a guy called Dennis who’s obviously read this area has prompted this reply…
My NGG previews are now working and my possible fix is on a post http://strangelyperfect.tv/402/wordpress-251-fix-for-tinymce-visual-editor-malfunction/
I say “possible” as after I fixed the TinyMCE the gallery preview started working properly as a side effect!
This could be co-incidence as I’d deleted and re-installed the full WP2.51 several times, as well as the same procedure for NGG as well as the swf file from elsewhere as detailed in the install instructions. However, I only noticed that the NGG preview was working after the TinyMCE trouble cleared.
I reckon it’s either:-
- a gzip compression effect, as that’s what the TinyMCE fix fixes. Somehow it’s affecting the NGG, that’s all I know for now with my limited knowledge and time.
or:-
- something to do with my host. I have several dedicated IP addresses and the problem only manifests on one site (a single IP). The others, using the same software and plugins work fine. I checked by swapping themes if the theme was affecting anything. Answer, no they don’t!
It took me a weekend of checks, installs and tests to get everything going so for now, I’m loath to twiddle anything else even though the behaviour is un-explainable.

Hi,
I installed the plugin and got it up and running. I put the gallery in the sidebar but nothing shows up. I can see a thin line that if you scroll over it can give you a link to the pic. So it is working but somehow it isn’t showing up properly. Same result in IE7 and FireFox3. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And I’ve already made sure max-width: 100% is deleted from the stylesheet. Thanks.

Hello Everyone!
I installed the program (unpacked the files and dropped them into a folder “wp-content/plugins/nggallery” as instructed by the program author), but I can’t find the Plugin in Wordpress in order to Activate it. I must have missed an obvious first-step somewhere, but I have no idea where I went wrong.

Hi, i was trying to use your feature. unfortunately i do see the “galery” plug in on the write page. but, I can not upload the pictures (just as i was used when i wrote an post/page), or manage them somehow. also does every editor has access to the new NextGen feature?
November 2nd, 2008 at 10:00 pm
When I first installed NextGEN all images had the ESC/CLOSE option in lower right hand corner. Now that is gone for some reason. Image in gallery manager still have them. I deleted and uploaded again but same thing. All the rest of NGen is working fine.
Thanks for any input.

Hi,
I was wondering if one could add download links to the images in the Nextgen gallery plugin. I am somewhat of a newbie and I’d like to put the preview images of wordpress themes in the gallery with a download from them.
Any ideas?

I have WP 2.7 installed with Divvaflip and Nextgen plugins and ran into :
Fatal error: Class ‘nggallery’ not found in /home/w5248574/…./public_html/wp-content/plugins/wp_divvaflip/display_gallery.php on line 212
The code is:
211 $picture = $wpdb->get_row(”SELECT * FROM $wpdb->nggpictures WHERE pid = ‘$picid’”);
212 $thumbsrc = nggallery::get_thumbnail_url($picid);
Can some give me a hint where to look for a solution? Divvaflip seems not to have been tested with 2.7.
Thanks you for your help!

Hi,
I installed the gallery three times, but while uploading some images, there occurs an error when making the thumbnails.
result:
- images are uploaden
- no thumbnails when checking the ftp
I could upload them manually, but I don’t know how they are supposed to called. When I pick the original name of the picture, it doens’t display the tumbnail I putted myself in the “tumbnail” folder.
Is there someone who has got a solution?

Hi there,
Fantastic walkthrough. I wonder if you could help me on a couple of points. (I posted these in Wordpress support but with no replies, I hoped I could ask you too)
1. Can I repeat a gallery’s description on it’s gallery page along with all it’s thumbnails. I tried to drop the gallery_desc tag in to gallery.php but no luck/
2. Can I list the titles of my five latest gallerys on my homepage. I already have the slideshow widget running in my header at the site, but I would like to list the titles (which link through to their galleries too if possible)
Thanks for your help,
Andy

When I click on [Show as slideshow] link, on the next page show ‘The Flash Player and a browser with Javascript support are needed..’, but when i add a post with [slideshow id=gallery-name] it works.
Why [Show as slideshow] link don’t work?
April 9th, 2009 at 7:30 am
Yeah, I can’t get the slideshow to work either? The only reason I downloaded it was for the slideshow feature and I guess that feature is broken. There is no feedback from the plug-in as to why the code “[slideshow id=1]” does not work?
Yes, I downloaded the imagerotator.swf and placed in the “wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery” folder.

Hi i am using [album id=2 template=extend] to display my album on an the default but wider (1024px) page in wordpress. if i add another it goes under the other one and so on, i was wondering if there is a way to make it go next to it, like have 2 colums of albums, my solution was to add a table with 2 colums making each 50% wide but when i clicked the album they images would also get displayed on the 50% part of the table.
basically what i want is:
[album id=1 template=extend][album id=2 template=extend][album id=3 template=extend][album id=4 template=extend]
[album id=5 template=extend]
and the albums to be graphically displayed like that instead of:
[album id=1 template=extend][album id=2 template=extend]
[album id=3 template=extend]
[album id=4 template=extend]
[album id=5 template=extend]
any help?
thanks

[SOLUTION FOUND - PLEASE READ]
Hi Guys,
I just installed this gallery and - like some of you -
I found that adding the tag to a page or a post was NOT
working.
When you create a gallery, it tells you that you can
[gallery id=1]add that gallery to a page manually by inserting
Well, this wasn’t working for me. I found however in
the settings of the gallery that you can ADD a page…
and when you do so, the gallery appears on the page.
Check the HTL tab on the page and you’ll see this:
[nggallery id=1]So it looks like the gallery msg is a legacy from
previous code?
Either way, add [nggallery id=1] (repalce number
with your gallery id) and that works.
I hope this helps anybody with the same issue.
Great gallery btw - FULL of features…
Jose

@Moises
Try using template=compact. I think that is the setting to use to set albums in a row.

Hi there,
I am having trouble uploading more than one image at a time. I’ve tried several ways to do this, including importing folder, uploading zip files, uploading all of the pictures via FTP, uploading the pictures using the Nextgen uploader… the pictures are all in the gallery folder, but it will only add one of them at a time (ie: when I scan the folder for new images). Each time I scan the folder for new images, it will add the next image located in the folder. I have to manually do this for each image… Can anyone help me?
April 30th, 2009 at 5:21 am
I just figured this out at http://www.cuckoomoon.ca - when you click “browse” you can select more than one image (hold down the shift key to select a range of files or the control key and click on them in scattershot mode) and then click Open. They will all be selected, then you can click “Upload images” and they all upload.
I’m quite impressed by this plugin so far.
May 6th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Heather,
Thanks… I tried that, but stll have the same issue. I have tried using the flash uploader and the regular one. Nothing… I have to add images one at a time, and it is such a pain. I am wondering if it is an issue with my WP theme (Sliding Door).
Thanks for commenting…

I think I finally figured out what the issue was… the reason I had to upload photos one at a time was because the photos were too large. I exported the whole library in a smaller resolution using Picasa (which made the process super simple, too). Then I was able to upload all the photos with Nextgen. Also, I discovered that I had issues with installing it at first, but was successful after disabling all the other plugins, installing and activating Nextgen, then reactivating the other plugins. Works great, now! As soon as I have time, I’ll be adding some galleries all over my site. I really like this plugin!

The problem below is enumerated many times in the WordPress forum but I have never seen a solution. It seems to be unique to Earthlink as the host. Any help is greatly appreciated!
After creating initial gallery I get a blank page with all expected WP admin menus on top and in left margin.

I have the same problem as “CHP Webmaster”. It seems to be Earthlink related but they are not of any help since they will only support Wordpress 2.0.4 or below. Their version of MySQL seem to be compliant (4.1.21). Earthlink support say they would “try and pass this on to their engineers”.
I have tried clean installs of both Wordpress 2.71 and the new BETA of 2.8.
The version of Nextgen Gallery is 1.3.1.
I am hosted by Earthlink and I have tried deleting and recreating the MySQL database with no luck.
Hope some one figures this one out. I really only need to use one plugin on my blog and Nextgen Gallery is it! sigh…
Thanks,
Brion McCarthy

This problem is definitely related to the Earthlink host. I installed on a GoDaddy host and NO PROBLEM! Everything went smooth as silk and works perfectly.
A GoDaddy account for a Wordpress blog is $5 per month. That’s the way I’m going for now. In the past 10 days I spent countless hours trying to solve this so $5 is a tiny price to pay.
If anyone has any clues as to what needs to be changed in Earthink please post. From reading other forum posts this problem is pervasive on Earthlink accounts.

I am trying to put a description under each picture on the home page of my site. I created a post and put in the following code:
[slideshow id=3 w=588 h=400]For each thumbnail in the gallery I have defined a alt title text/description as well as tags (which were the same) but nothing displays on the home page. What tag is missing from above to get the description to display.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:46 am
I’m sure this has been asked a lot, but I haven’t been able to find an answer anywhere - so if you can point me to some spot where this is explained, it would be appreciated. (You can see what I’ve done on my home page.)
All I would like to do is set a link to a thumbnail, so that it takes you directly to a particular post. What I was able to do is put the url in the description so that you get the pop up which has a link to the post in my store; but I would like to skip the pop up and go directly to the post.
Anyone have an idea of how to do this? Thanks. Dave Beckerman

Hi!
What is the syntax used on this demo page?
http://nextgen.boelinger.com/tag/shortcodes/
I want to post only one image of a gallery, but when the user clicks on that, he/she can click through the whole gallery.
That’s what is on this demo page.
The random shortcode itself doesn’t solve it!
So what is the syntax for this?
Thanks!

Your blog is referenced numerous places on the web (including by Alex, the author of the plug-in) as one of the definitive sources of documentation. However, the code examples are perhaps out of date in some places. An update to this blog entry might help the uninitiated. with the new release of the Nextgen plugin, it seems that an ‘author’ role can be set to edit one particulary gallery.
However this does not seem to work:
> Roles/capabilities
> manage gallery > set to ‘author’: result it automatically changed into ‘administrator’.
Has anyone experienced the same problem?
- my subscribers are able to edit one page, with one gallery,
- but they may not be able to create new galleries, only change the pictures in one gallery, assigned to them..
Thanks for reading,
Diederik

A couple of hours ago I installed this plugin along with the NextGen smooth plkugin and it was working great, I then upgraded WP to version 2.8.6 and moved my WP files into the root of my site. Now the galleries don’t work I just get a with box where the galleries should be. I’ve tried deactivatin/reactivating,uninstalling/reinstalling, adding more galleries etc everything looks fine in wp-admin but when I preview the gallery page I get this white square. Any ideas? As I said it was working great and I was really happy, now Im panicing a bit.

Is there an easy way to speed up the nextgen plugin? It looks for ipnation and has basically destroyed my site. It loads so slow not even I would stay there long enough to see the site.

Hello,
I cannot seem to activate the slideshow aspect of this plugin.
What do I need to do to add photos to a slideshow? (Galleries and albums work).
Thank you.

Hello!
I have lost the sort button when amending the gallery on WordPress - is this because I downloaded a newer version?
If someone could advise me it would be great - am baffled!
