The installation instructions in the readme.txt file indicate that the plugin should be copied to a folder called nggallery, but Alex must have removed that requirement since writing that as the code clearly allows the plugin to be installed in any directory below wp-content\plugins. I initially installed it in the nextgen-gallery directory and it worked fine.
Before the plugin will work, you need to install JW Image Rotator in the NextGEN Gallery plugin directory. You can get that from http://www.jeroenwijering.com/. Once you’ve downloaded it, just copy the imagerotator.swf file to the NextGEN Gallery plugin directory.
Now you can activate the plugin. You’ll notice that there are two NextGEN plugins - a NextGEN Gallery plugin and a NextGEN Gallery Widget plugin. If you want to display images on your sidebar, activate the widget plugin as well.

Thanks for this post. I had overlooked the JW Image Rotator and I just added it thanx to you!

Hello, I just installed NextGen and i noticed that the file imagerotator.swf is already in the directory of NextGen. So i suppose that it is not necessary anymore to upload the *.swf file. Is this correct?
regards rob

Yes and no. Strictly speaking, the included imagerotator.swf file probably works. But it’s not the same as the one on Jeroen Wijering’s site - to be on the safe side, use JW’s latest release; go to his site and download it (pay attention to the license to be sure you meet its conditions).

Does Highslide need anything else installed? I can’t get HS to work, nor will anything else but Thickbox work.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
I’ve installed the plugin, and been able to set all of the options, create a gallery, and upload a photo. But whenever I try to save changes to the Gallery Settings under ‘Manage Gallery’ or click on ‘Upload Pictures’ from the Gallery main page, I get a 403 error: The requested URL /themes/nextgen-gallery/admin/wp25/admin.php was not found on this server. I don’t know why it is pointing to the themes directory. When I do a search of the directory wp-content:plugins:nextgen-gallery:admin I find many links to the themes directory. Any suggestions or clues?
Thanks!

@jfg69 - Unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to look at Highslide. Sorry.
@strottrot - Do you have the plugin files below the themes directory? I don’t think it will work from there. You should make sure you have them below the plugins directory. Sorry if I’ve misunderstood your issue.

Hi David, thanks for all your support,
I am trying to upload pics in my NG gallery, and I get this message
“You do not have the GD Library installed. This class requires the GD library to function properly”
where do I download it from and where do i upload it on my server?
thanks in advance,
Alex

Hello ALex,
I had the same problem as you and I resolved this by installing the php gd library on my webserver. If you have a Linux webserver and have acces to it, you can do the following (on Debian/Ubuntu with Apache running, at least):
dpkg –get-selections | grep php (to find out which php version is installed);
apt-get install php4-gd (or php5-gd, or maybe both if it doesn’t work);
/etc/init.d/apache restart (to restart your webserver).
Now it should work fine. If your server runs another distribution, search on Google how to install the php gd package.
Good Luck!

Hi David,
maybe you can help me.
I’ve upgraded to 1.0.2 and to 1.1.0 version of NextGen using the automatic upgrade now available in WP 2.7 plugin page.
Everything works fine a part from the slideshow which doesn’t work anymore. I looked around but I really can’t find the reason.
Here a link with some galleries for you to check.

Have you a any suggestion?
Many thanks.

I am interested in using the galleries that I create for my blog as a tool for my website as well. Is there any way to reference an album or gallery from outside WordPress? It makes no sense for me to maintain two separate galleries of photos on my website.
Thanks for the great tool!

I uploaded imagerotator.swf to the plugins/nggallery. I do not see an option to activate it and my slideshow’s clearly don’t work because of this. Any idea what could be the problem.
April 9th, 2009 at 7:15 am
How do I activate the slide show? What is the code for that?
May 10th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
I also dont know how to activate it……
May 12th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
It is not clear to me exactly where to copy the imagerotator.swf file. Can anyone help me out? My slideshow is not showing anything on the page. If I put in an ID that doesn’t exist, it does give me the error message that the gallery does not exist. So I am assuming my imagerotator.swf file is in the incorrect place.
I have copied it (tried it)in the following locations:
(1) /wp-content/uploads/imagerotator
(2) /wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery
(3) /wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/widgets
OR… I activated the plugin prior to downloading the imagerotator…. I tried deactivating and reactivating the plugin, but that did not work either…
Any help would be appreciated.

Valerie,
I had same problem. This worked:
1. Place swf file in wp-content/uploads
2. In WordPress administration panel, go to Gallery | Options | Slideshow (top menu tab)
3. Next to “Path to the imagerotator” click “Search now” (It should put your uploads path in)
4. Go to “Plugins” and deactivate and reactivate NextGen Gallery
5. Enjoy.

Are their any issues if you automatically install from within wordpresses latest plugin search facility? Since they added this function I’ve not done an awful lot of ftp work for my plugins.

I wasted an afternoon on this piece of **** plug-in. It does not work. The instructions are absolute crap. It shows preview pictures that are not even in my gallery folder and the display format is terrible. It gets a big one star!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:02 am
Yes it’s a waist of time…. this plugin sucks deeply
July 17th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
helo david

However, no Options or Settings are available for “NextGEN Gallery” plug-in. It only shows Deactivate and Edit?? Also, I dont have the NextGEN Gallery Widget plugin?

@phil, Josh, Bryan
upload the IMAGEROTATOR.SWF to and folder you wish (preferably the ../plugin/nextgen-gallery
2. go to the gallery in the admin panel (look near the bottom left)
3. goto OPTIONS–>SLIDESHOW
4 you should see a button to search for IMAGEROTATOR.SWF, click it and it will search you wordpress installation for the file, once its found it will fill in the correct path next to the button
5 scroll down and click save to save settings
thats it!!!

Hello there,
I recently installed the NEXTGEN Gallery and it seems to be working fine.
However I am looking to setup the widget plugin on my sidebar, but I can’t figure out where is its setup (in the admin).
Can anyone help on that ?
Thanks

Your tips worked.

Spent a day setting this gallery software up. Eventually got it working about as well as it’s going to. The documentation is appalling and, even working 100%, I think the best it can get is still nowhere good enough. I’d much rather pay for good software than spend 20 hours getting free stuff to work. Kudos to the designer for his efforts - if he can find someone to come in and do the last ten percent to get it really amazing, I’ll happily pay for the finished product.

I followed Dave’s instructions exactly, but I can’t get the compact mode for album views to work. It appears that I’m missing the template files that the shortcodes use. Is there something I should do to install templates?
I’ve tried:
[album id=1, compact]
[album id=1,compact]
[album id=1 mode=compact]
[album id=1 template=compact]
All of them continue to give me the exttended mode view.

I cannot activate the plugin, I just get “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
What’s going on?
March 8th, 2010 at 11:43 am
Every time I try to find documentation that makes sense, it is too old and thus not relevant to the current version of the plugin or it is so badly written that I can’t understand it. Guess I will have to delete the plugin.
